Snow globes. They are certainly one of the world's oldest and most cherished Christmastime treasures. But why should we only be able to enjoy their delights for just a short time at the end of every year? We should be able to enjoy these wonderful goodies all year long, and we can!
You can easily create snow globes for absolutely ANY occasion, and if you're crafty then you probably have some items already around that you can use. You can get as ornate with your snowglobe as you desire, or perhaps you choose to keep it very simple. You can create holiday themed globes, or you may create a globe that can stay out all year long. I am using a Valentine's snow globe that I made for an example in this article. No matter what you choose, you're sure to get years of enjoyment out of it once this fun project is complete!
To get started all you need is a clean, clear jar of some sort. Make sure whatever jar you choose has a water-tight lid that goes with it, and a good sized opening so the items that will go inside the snow globe will fit through.
Next, you will glue the items you have selected to place in your snow globe to the inside of the jar's lid. For my snow globe, I used a plastic heart about 1' or so in diameter (small enough that it fit through the opening of the jar I used) and hot-glued it upright inside the center of the lid. You can place your items as you desire, then set aside to dry. Once dry, you may adorn the sides of the lid with beads or paint if you'd like, and you could also place or paint accents on the outside of the jar, too. I adorned the lid on my globe with glass pearls and placed some pretty glass hearts around the outside of my snow globe, using hot-glue again. Set everything aside to dry, once more.
In the meantime, find or make yourself some pretty "snow" using plastic confetti, tinsel or something similar. I found some red and white tinsel left over from Christmas that I cut up into tiny bits and used in my snow globe. Get creative and try to coordinate your "snow" with theme of your globe for an extra special touch.
Once you've created your snow for the globe, you're ready to fill it up and enjoy it. You may used purified water and or glycerin, but I chose to use mineral oil for it's thickness. When the snow falls, it falls very slowly and it's so pretty. Fill your jar with the solution of your choice, filling it all the way to the very top as full as you can. Next, just screw the lid on as tight as possible and turn upside down to display. You now have a beautiful little snow globe decoration that everyone will enjoy, more than just at Christmastime!
