Hand sewing stitches can be evenly and beautifully done with some attention and care. Here are some sewing tips to help you when hand sewing your projects.
First, find a comfortable chair with low arm rests and good back support. Sit in a relaxed and comfortable position. Avoid sitting slouched over. Instead, sit up straight and keep your back in an upright position to avoid back discomfort.
It is best to work under the natural daylight, but if you need to work at night, use energy saving light bulbs to provide adequate lighting, and avoid straining your eyes. If your palms sweat while sewing, use a clean hand cloth to wipe them off regularly. After the project, use a little laundry detergent to wash the project by hand.
To achieve beautiful stitching, you will need plenty of time, to avoid being rushed . Keep your needed equipment and tools within reach to avoid running to and fro. Secure the ends of your stitching securely and neatly with back stitches.
Short and egg-eyed needle are best for hand sewing. Use a needle threader if you have difficulty threading your needles. Use short piece of thread, between 13 to 15 inches long, for easy handling. Long threads suffer too much wear and tear and get tangled easily. The thread should always match the fabric as closely as possible.
If you are unfamiliar with the sewing techniques that you are going to use, practice or test on a separate piece of scrap before starting to sew. This will help you to work out any issues you may have with the needle, thread or the sewing techniques that you are using. Keep the sewing relaxed and evenly tensioned to achieve a beautiful, even stitching.
Sewing by hand is a very satisfying activity. Enjoy.
