As humans, we are constantly searching for security and a sense of belonging. We crave happiness, joy, peace, and love. For most of us, we also have at least a spark of hope that never dies, no matter how overwhelming the odds. Often those with artistic personalities experience these feelings more acutely than those who are less creative.
Breaking into the market for handmade items is a difficult undertaking and the obstacles often seem impossible to face. Keeping hope alive while finding that elusive formula that will build a successful business is key. To assist in maintaining hope, try to remember the following:
Peace. Do you feel peaceful when you create? Many crafters find that working on a project helps them relax.
Happiness. Try to find a glimmer of happiness in every situation. Training your mind to look for the positive happens one step at a time, but creates more hope with each step you take.
Joy. What gives you a feeling of pure joy? Once you find something that makes you truly joyful, try to arrange your schedule so that you can experience that joy at least once a week. Joy is a constant companion of hope.
Love. Interacting with those we love, whether it be family or friends, helps create a sense of belonging and security. Don't forget to schedule time with your loved ones. It is difficult to lose hope when surrounded by those you love.
Following the above tips should help increase feelings of optimism and hope. Remember, it is just as important to be mentally prepared for the challenges of business as it is to be physically and financially prepared. You need physical stock and cash for supplies, but without a positive attitude and a bit of hope, you aren't fully armed with the tools of success.
