The handmade industry ranges from jewelry to artwork and beyond. One of the greatest features of the handmade industry is in the guitar niche. Handmade acoustic guitars have a very particular benefit over commercial guitar manufacturers because they offer premium quality one of a kind products. Even large scale custom guitar manufacturers, such as Carvin, cannot compete with the handmade acoustic guitar industry.

Why would handmade acoustic guitars sell better than commercially manufactured guitars?

In general, a commercially manufactured instrument is not going to be custom. They may offer a variety of different models so that you can find one you like, with the features you like, but it is still not custom. A custom guitar is going to be exactly what you want. For this reason, a guitarist looking for a high quality instrument is going to be more interested in a custom handmade guitar.

How do I market handmade acoustic guitars?

Handmade guitars provide some specific benefits over mass manufactured ones. Here are few of these points to highlight in your marketing campaign.
1. Custom Handmade Acoustic Guitars tend to perform better. This is because they have been cared for at every step of the process by a professional luthier. It is unlikely that a luthier has even touched a guitar that has come through a mass producer. At every single point the luthier will make adjustments so that they guitar plays the best it can.

2. Handmade guitars are personal. If I order one, it is ‘Anthony’s Guitar’ because there isn’t another like it. Often you can ask for much more than what you get from a mass manufacturer such as a different shape, custom designs, custom sound holes, etc.

3. Customer service. Custom handmade acoustic guitars come from small companies of one, two or just a handful of people. This means that it is easier to get someone on the phone if you are dissatisfied or need further modifications done.

The biggest thing to remember for handmade guitar sales is that you are competing primarily with the big companies. Most people can easily be convinced of quality, so your job is not to sell the guitar, but to sell the handmade concept. This is done best through conscientious marketing of the customizability and care that comes with every instrument.
