Need a Zombie Escape Plan?

May 31, 2009 | By

When was the modern zombie introduced into pop culture? Many think it was in 1921, when H.P. Lovecraft wrote his short story “Herbert West--Reanimator.” Richard Matheson then enthralled fans of the genre with his science fiction/horror novel I Am Legend.  A tale of future Los Angeles plagued by disease that left its residents in a zombie-like state, the book was later adapted into a popular film in 2007 starring Will Smith.  One of the most famous zombie films is George Romero’s cult classic Night of the Living Dead, which was released in 1968–it’s since become a cult classic with fans of all ages.

With Shaun of the Dead, released in 2004, a new comic idea of zombies or the “undead” was thrown into pop culture by the cheeky Brits.  We tag along with a retail employee who hates his job, lost his girlfriend, and relies mainly on his slob of a best friend to help him save his friends and family from the flesh-hungry undead.  This new comic spin on the undead was just what zombies needed!  Humor  breathed new life into a genre that had gone by the same ideas and rules for decades.

It is no doubt that the zombie genre has gained many fans over the years. Zombie culture is here to stay, and even though you would think Halloween is the only day to think about these doomed creatures, some of us are on the look out for zombies everyday. You never know where you may encounter one. Here are some tips on how to recognize zombies—and how to keep yourself from becoming one, too!

How to recognize a zombie:

1. Zombies come in all shapes and sizes, and can be young or old. They walk slowly with limps or dragging limbs, and most put their hands and arms in front of them as they walk, almost as if they are leading their bodies.

2. Since they are reanimated after death, either through some sort of science experiment gone wrong or a case of dark voodoo magic, the zombie will obviously have a particular strong, unattractive smell.

3. Zombies will always feast on the flesh of the living. If they’re not actively feasting, they will be mindlessly searching for the next feast.

4. Zombies are usually moaning, groaning, or just simply ask to eat your brain. Unfortunately, in most cases, you will not be asked first.

Avoid becoming zombie lunch:

You can prepare yourself with a Zombie Escape Plan from Christine Renee.  Perfect for mapping out your escape plans and storing your important numbers.  Arm yourself with Zombie Repellent by Magickalrealism , which comes in a cobalt blue glass vial with a rollerball applicator--great for application while you're on the run.

Or—Get Into the Zombie Spirit:

If those products don’t work for whatever reason--if you can’t beat them, join them!   You can always don some of the latest in zombie fashion.  Show everyone your love for brains with a Zombie Heart Pendant by Rude and Reckless or even preview how you'll look as a member of the living dead by seeing yourself modified with the Zombie Mod photo by My Magic Me.  Don’t forget to involve the kids too! Everyone knows they love things that go bump in the night.  Poppycat has a Creepazoid Coloring Book that’s sure to thrill any little one with zombie-like tendencies.

It is amazing how the current love of horror films and zombie flicks have evolved into such a pop culture trend.  From dancing zombies in the 1982 video for Michael Jackson’s “Thriller,” to music and movies created by Rob Zombie, zombies are here to stay.  My suggestion is to be prepared!  Know how to handle an encounter with a zombie, and be sure you take every step necessary to avoid that occurrence. There are many handmade items that will help you to avoid zombies—or embrace your destiny and become one. The choice is yours.
