Schools will soon be letting children out for the summer, or have already done so. As the weather turns warmer many start looking to the farmers markets for fresh vegetables and fruits. Summer is the time for the freshest of meals and many are looking to eat more local foods.
The plants are arriving at local green houses. Many people are putting in a garden this year, some for the first time. What if you are looking for certain plant and do not want to travel to get it? Did you know you can find plants on Artfire or Etsy?
Plants such as organic thyme, and white horehound, to beautiful flowers such as sneezeweed, and flowering herbs such as bee balm are available. But you are not limited to just plants. Many types of seeds are available too. One can find heirloom tomatoes, purple haze carrots, and even heirloom oak leaf lettuce.
Many groups have issued a challenge to their members, to eat only local grown or produced items this year. Could you do it? Along with that comes encouragement to use hand made grocery bags when getting the produce and fruits. Patterns are available for crochet, knit or to purchase ready made.
No matter how you carry the goods home, fresh fruit and vegetables that are grown locally are better tasting. Those you grow yourself are even better. Eating local is in. There is even a new word for this trend, Localvore. So enjoy the great days of summer and eat local!
