Making Lemonade Volume 5

June 11, 2009 | By

Lemonade___Picture_courtesy_of_jbcurio.jpgToday I will be responding to a question from Suzbax of Jewelry to Keep on ArtFire. She asks, "I have heard several different opinions on photographing items you are selling and how to make them appear more professional. One opinion was they should be on a plain background. Another was to have a nice visual presentation with props. So what is the best way to make sure your items, and specifically jewelry, is presented in an eye catching way and still be professional?"

This is a great question and something many sellers struggle with. While the background and props are a matter of personal preference, there are a few tips you should follow to ensure your picture look professional.

1. Clarity.  The most important aspect of a professional picture is clarity. If your shot is blurry, people can't see your item. A tripod and proper lighting can help you take crisp, clear pictures. Steampunk_Ring_by_Catherinette_Rings.jpg

2. Angles.  Since online buyers can't touch the item they are considering purchasing, it is important to take pictures of your item from as many angles as possible. Many people like to touch the items they buy, especially jewelry. Showing several angles per item helps overcome the problem of being unable to touch.

3. Use of Props.  The use of props is a personal choice, but if you decide to use props, be careful not to overdo it. If your props are too busy, you don't get a clear view of the item. Make sure the colors of your props don't clash with the item. In general, you want your item to be the most visually appealing thing in your picture. If you find your eye is drawn to your prop rather than your item, you may want to rethink the use of that prop. Props should enhance the look of your item, not pull attention away from it.

While there is no magic formula for the perfect picture, following these tips should help you present your items in a professional manner.
