Pop Art – Part Two

June 17, 2009 | By

MAYA.pngIn honour of Father's Day, here is the second part of my interview with Maya Murillo about her Mantastic Crafter Dad, Patrick Murillo. Check out the first part here.

Wendy T. Gibson: What do your friends think about your crafty dad?
Maya Murillo: They think he's the coolest!

WTG: What kind of crafty projects, (including web site building if that applies) have you and your dad made together? Is there one thing that sticks out in your memory?
MM: One time in the third grade i had a project involving Martin Luther King Jr. and I had no idea what to do! So my dad insisted we build this little stage, a podium, and a 3-D version of him! All out of cardboard! I got first place for most creative! (and for putting tons of glitter all over it!)

WTG: What do you like the most about your dad’s art?
MM: I like how he can look at something ordinary, and turn it into something you'd never expect.

WTG: What craft techniques, in particular, has your dad taught you?
MM: He's taught me many things, such as comic book drawings, how to make things out of duct tape, and so much more!

WTG: Why do you like doing crafts with your dad?
MM: I like doing crafts with my dad because we get to spend quality creative time together. Not just your average "Hey father! Let's paint a picture together!" It's "Yo dad! How do you draw the eyes if you're going for the joyful look?" I love my dad! :)

WTG: Do you ever wish your dad wasn’t crafty?
MM: Never, because then my life would be so pale!

WTG: Is your crafty style different than your dad’s style?
MM: Its the same in a sense that we both love to create things that are completely unique using cardboard, plastic bottles, or items laying around the house. But its way different at the same time because his projects are more elaborate, and mine are a little messy!

WTG: If you have kids, would you like their dad to be crafty?
MM: He'd have no choice, actually. Considering my parents! Once you're sucked in to all the glitter and paint, there's no way you can walk away.

WTG: Did you help with La Casa Murrillo?
MM: Yes I did! My grandma and I helped paint all the plates in the kitchen!

WTG: What does the crafty future hold for you and your dad?
MM: The combining of all of our talents from multimedia, crafts, and music to make an impact on the art scene today!

WTG: What else would you like to say about your dad?
MM: He is an amazing, loving, and inspiring father to have. I'm the luckiest daughter :)

:: This article is dedicated to my own wonderful Dad, John Gibson, who passed away in 1988, but is still with me always! Happy Father's Day, Pop! :: wtg
