I’m a T- shirt junkie. From my favorite bands to souvenirs from destinations I have visited, I have a collection so vast that I constantly have to re-evaluate my “stock” and purge what I have not recently worn. It can be a difficult decision when it comes time to weed through my stash, but luckily, I’ve found a way to repurpose my treasures into one of a kind, conversation starting totes.
The Materials:
An old, ironed tee shirt
Sewing machine and thread
Scissors
Sewing pins
On your mark, get set, go…
Lay your T-shirt flat, printed side facing you. Cut off your sleeves leaving a “tank top” style shirt. Fold your
now sleeveless shirt in half lengthwise making sure your arm holes are flush and your neckline is symmetrical on both sides. You will want to cut around the neck line, but making sure instead of the curved bottom that you cut the bottom on the neck in a “v” shape as this will be part of your handles. Now turn your tee shirt inside out making sure your side seams are symmetrical. Decide how long you want your bag to be and pin a line of sewing pins along what you will make as your bottom bag seam. Once you are satisfied with your length, sew a zig zag stitch on top of your line of pins making sure you front and batch stitch. When you are done, remove your pins, snip any stray threads, and cut any excess shirt below your seam. Turn your shirt right sides out and voila! You have a brand new bag made from an old tee shirt.
