When looking to color for inspiration, you must also consider the crowd to whom you wish to appeal. If you host a booth at a seasonal craft fair, buyers are often drawn to products colored to match the general season or festival theme such as a spring/summer festival or a holiday festival.
Let's take a look at some brighter colors like light greens, blue, pink and yellow. These colors often represent spring and summer, sometimes making us feel light hearted and rejuvenated. Green and blue remind me of walking barefooted in the cool crisp grass, staring upward into the cloudless sky. Pinks, yellows, bright purples, vibrant oranges and so many others represent the nature's rebirth - the explosion of color we are witness to every spring.
Then there are colors that make us remember the colder months, like dark reds, rust orange, forest green and brown. These are colors that we are surrounded by during the holidays as we gather with our families, filling our bellies and making memories. These colors lend a bit of nostalgia as we remember trudging through piles of orange-red leaves begging for sweet treats from our neighbors or peeking down the stairwell hoping to see a man in a bright red suit bent under our glistening green Christmas tree.
What about non-traditional colors? Hot pink, neon green, electric blue and "caution sign" orange, for instance, don't always give us the warm-fuzzy memories that the seasonal colors bring! They do, however, seep with energy and excitement. I am reminded of my adolescence, showing up to a party with hot pink and black bracelets stacked up my arms, strobing neon lights thrumming to the music. These colors often appeal to the young - or at least the young at heart!
Melissa, owner of Made with Clay and Love, says "If I see beautiful colors (whether it be one single bold color, or a beautiful combination) I am inspired by it. It could be anything - something found in nature, a TV show, artwork, a shirt at the mall... I will be inspired to create something using those colors." Maybe we should all follow her example and just let color carry us away!
