Writing a good listing for your item is one of the many things that will draw a customer to your product. I have seen some really great listings, and I have seen some that leave me with a lot of questions. There are even more that make me think,” This item is so fab, what was she thinking when she made it! What inspired this work of art?” You want your listing to be as short as possible without overwhelming the customer, but you want to get your point across and all the relevant info as well.
Don’t forget sizes! One of my main questions in reading some listings has been size. Always measure your work and post the size of the item in inches and centimeters if you have a way to measure in centimeters, we have lots of people overseas looking to buy too!
On Artfire , on the listing page, you can fill out the section where you can tell what inspired your item, I recommend filling it out if you have time and have a nice short story to tell about the creation of the item. People like reading those that’s part of the fun of handmade, getting to know the artisan and knowing what inspired the item they made. On Etsy you could include a small paragraph at the bottom of your listing with a short bit of info about your item and how it was inspired.
If you have a product with a lot of good sales points a bulleted list would do great. Instead of never ending paragraphs that may overwhelm the buyer, make short statements highlighted by a bullet so they can read thru the list with ease. It won’t put them off from reading either, and the bullets make it look “official”
If you can do custom sizes in the item you have listed you could mention that in the listing too, if you can do different colors, or sizes, let the customer know. You may just get some custom work that way.
In all, keep it as short and too the point as possible with all the relevant info included so the customer has no questions for you. Look at your item from their perspective and think of all the questions they may have. Answer them all in your listing, and if you have time include a short piece about how it was inspired at the end for those of us who want to know, that makes your piece more appealing and makes you, the artist, seem more real to the customer.
