Last week, we went thorough tailor tacking. This week, we will start on seam tacking. Seam tacking helps to keep the edges of the fabric pieces together, making it easy to sew on the permanent stitches.
To start seam tacking, you will need a needle and matching thread. Pin the 2 edges of the fabric together. Thread your needle and make a knot at the end of the thread. Work from right to left through both thickness of fabric.
Here are 3 different methods of tacking that will help you to tack successfully; even tacking, uneven tacking, and machine tacking. Even tacking is tacking where the stitches are of equal length, and they should be no longer than ½”. Uneven tacking is stronger, and is quickly done. Take small stitches, 1/8 in. long, at regular ½” intervals. When you get to the end of the thread, end the tacking with a knot or with back stitching. Continue with a new thread until you finish tacking. Remove the pins and you are done.
To use your sewing machine to tack the seams, adjust your stitch length to a larger stitch. Loosen the tension of the upper thread slightly. Pin the pieces together and sew a straight stitch through the seams. Once you have completed this, remove the pins and the tacking is done.
Next week, I will go through more methods of seam tacking, including an accurate method of seam tacking that you can use for your sewing projects. Stay tuned!
