In the previous installment of QuiltPossible! we assembled the center blocks of a set of potholders using the Disappearing Nine Patch technique. In this article, we will slice & dice a fat quarter into the perfect pieces we need for backing and borders.
Step 1
From your fat quarter, make sure that it is pressed well, squared, and prepared for rotary cutting. Fold the fat quarter in half so that the fold is along the 18" width.
Subdivide this fat quarter so that you have one 10" wide strip cut, and four 1.75" wide strips cut.
Step 2
From the 10" wide strip, sub-cut this into a 10" square. Take two of the 1.75" wide strips and sub-cut those into 6" lengths. You will need four of these pieces.
Take the remaining two 1.75" wide strips and sub-cut to 8.5". You will need four of these pieces. When you are done, your fat quarter will have been divided like so:

The blue markers in the photo show the "extra" pieces that are left over from our fat quarter after cutting out the pieces we need. You'll know you're a true quilter when your first instinct is to save these in a scrap bag rather than throw them away!
Step 3
Take your potholder block and place it face up on the table. Take two of the 1.75" x 6" pieces and place them right sides down on top of the potholder block, aligning them so that they are on opposite edges. Use pins to hold these in place. Repeat for the other block.

Step 4
Using a 1/4" seam on your machine, stitch the 6" borders to each of your potholders. Press the seams toward the border fabric.
Step 5
Take the potholder block (now with two borders attached) and place it face up on the table. Take two of the 1.75" x 8.5" border strips and pin those right sides down to each block on opposite edges. Repeat Step 4 for these 8.5" borders.

Now you have two potholder tops that are ready for basting and quilting. Take the opportunity this weekend to locate Insul-Bright® if you haven't already; a pot holder just isn't respectable unless it keeps you from burning your hands!
