More on How to Seam Tack: Temporary Stitches

August 14, 2009 | By

photo_6583_20090526.jpgLast week we discussed seam tacking. Here is more information on seam tacking and techniques.

There is an accurate manner of marking seam lines, known as Trace Tacking. Trace tacking will stay put in fine or slippery materials. After cutting out the fabric, remove the pins. Fold back the seam allowances of the paper pattern. Place the paper pattern on a single piece of fabric. Use dressmaking tacking to mark along the seam allowances. To make dressmakers’ tacks, start with a knotted thread, make two 1/8” stitches, 1/8” away from each other, at ½” intervals.

Another method is known as Slip Tacking. It is often used when patterns have to be joined accurately together, like checks and stripes. To sew up slip tacking, fold in the edge of the 1 fabric on the seam line wrong sides together. Pin the folded edge to the seam line on the other piece of fabric right sides together. Sew even tacking stitches through the fold and the other piece of fabric directly on the seam line.

Next article, we will move on to the last segment of this series of temporary stitches. Tune in for more information on diagonal tacking methods.
