Meet Jennifer, the brains behind JenniferLynn Productions. She is an award winning photographer who also expresses her creativity through sewing, jewelry, and mixed media. She says the one thing all of these media have in common is that they each allow her to play with color. And looking through her shop whether it's a photographic print or jewelry or textiles you'll definitely see Jennnifer's play on color in everything she makes. Are you curious to know a little more about somone who creates in such a varied manner? Well....let's find out more:
Name: Jennifer Moore
Shop Name: JenniferLynnProductions
Location: Montgomery County, MD – I live within about a half hour of DC
What is the most difficult part of your craft?
The most difficult part of any of these techniques is translating that “vibe” or idea in my head into the finished product. Some pieces-- even some of the small ones--can take me months to complete. It's not much different for photos. If I go to an event or location with a feeling or a composition in mind, it's not always easy to get that shot just right.
Did someone teach you?
I've been taking art classes of one kind or another for as long as I can remember. As a photographer, I'm mostly self-taught, but I have a lot of knowledgeable and generous people in my life who have given me some coaching. I was hoping to take a class or two this fall to build on my skills, but that's not to be. Maybe in the spring.
Do you have your own work space or has it taken over the entire house?
The studio space is separated from the rest of the house by necessity: We have cats. I don't take any project that's meant for someone else out of that room to work on.
What kind of music do you listen to (if any) when you create?
When my boyfriend is not composing or mixing, I put on ambient, new age, dark wave, psy trance, or sometimes even just metal/radio rock. It all depends on my mood. If he is working, I'm hearing his music:) It's a good thing I like it!
What has been your most successful marketing technique?
Haha. I'll let you know when I start to hit it big. ;) Really, I think my blog and my Facebook page have been most helpful, because they are very interactive. If I could, I'd just sell face to face all the time. Talking with people directly is very important, I think, for gaining trust and respect. Facebook and my blog allow me to do this as an individual rather than as an “entity.”
Where can we find your work?
There's my ArtFire studio at jenniferlynnproductions.artfire.com
My Etsy photography shop which I'm closing is jlynnpro.etsy.com
I also sell my photography at jlynnpro.redbubble.com .
I hope to add T-shirts to the Redbubble site soon.
I also have my blog: dragnrags.blogspot.com
Who is your hero - artistic or otherwise? and why?
I have two-Joseph Campbell, who had such an amazing and extensive knowledge of worlds folklore. I used to watch his lectures, fascinated, because he would voice things that I had experienced on an intuitive level when I encountered these stories, but could not articulate. He saw and did so many things over the course of his life. I wish I could have met him or at least gone to one of his lectures. My other hero is David Gilmour of Pink Floyd. I love good guitar music, and that is what he does. I have been a Floyd fan since I was a teenager, because of David's work. I haven't learned to play guitar and have not decided whether I want to, but I love a good riff!
Do you have a favorite handmade item that you like to buy for yourself?
Good, vegan, handmade soap, hands down! I also love great purse/handbags. Yes, I make them, but the ones I make are not for me, or I'd keep them all! ;)
Do you have a favorite item that you have made?
As far as what's in my shop right now go, my favorite item is my “As Above, So Below” box. Overall, I'm very attached to a few of my paintings.
Where do you get inspiration from?
Lots of places: the people in my life, a word or phrase I might hear, nature...There are times times where I'll see just components and I'll get an idea based around that. For instance, I just bought a pendant, and I already have an idea for it. Sometimes I'll see a cool fabric and think to myself, “that needs to be a...(whatever.)”
What do you do to break a creative block?
I concentrate on other things, like housework. Goodness knows, my house can always use extra attention! I've been doing a lot of decluttering lately, and just a couple of weeks ago, some blocks lifted because of that.
What’s your supply addiction; is there a specific color or type of supply you just can’t pass up?
I'm really bad about fabric and beads. I just had to make myself go through and purge a bunch of fabric.
What is the best thing and the worst thing about being your own boss?
I'm not quite there yet-- I still have a day job—but the best thing about it, of course, is that I only answer to me ( and my customers, of course.) The worst things about it is that I'm the face of my company. If I screw up, there's nowhere to pass the buck. ;)
Do you belong to any clubs, groups or guilds?
I am a member of the DC Area Guild, the ArtFire Pagans Guild, the Ghouls Guild, the ArtFire Fiery Photographers Guild. I was also a member of Etsy's Crest team ( the Capitol Region Etsy Street Team) and I still keep in touch with them.
How about some of your favorites?
Color? Charcoal gray
Food? Italian
Quote? “...For behold, I have been with you from the beginning, and I am That which is attained at the end of desire.” It's from the charge of the Goddess. To me, it is an expression of [DEITY]'s all encompassing love.
Holiday? The Summer Solstice!
