Save Those Scraps! Fabric Button Tutorial

September 10, 2009 | By

I am a fabricholic. Anyone who knows me, knows that. I had to open a destash shop just to make room for MORE fabric! So I acquire a good bit of fabric scraps. But alas, they often just sit....then I realized, surely there must be SOMETHING to do with these scraps!?

One thing I did was to create a teddy bear stuffed with fabric scraps! Take your traditional stuffed bear pattern, leave an opening in the back, close it with a velcro or zipper, and stuff with fabric scraps!

I also discovered the many beautiful fabric buttons you can create! You can find artisans who turn them into thumbtacks, buttons, magnets, ponytail holders, bookmarks and more!

So how do you make those nifty fabric buttons? Psssst...lean in...I'm going to tell you. But I'm warning you..it's VERY addictive. I am not responsible for your mass purchases of button making supplies.

You can purchase the buttons from most fabric stores, online suppliers such as ones on Artfire or Etsy, or other online sites.

For this tutorial I snagged a set of size 24 button kit from the fabric store.

Step One:
Grab your fabric scraps, buttons, kit and glass of wine (optional).

Step Two:
The size of the fabric you need depends on the size of buttons. Size 24 buttons are small, so choose a fabric that has a smaller print. Size 60 buttons are large enough for a good size print, great for animal faces, flowers, etc.

Step Three:
Take the button and choose your placement on the fabric.

Step Four:
Push the button down inside the white part of the button kit. This will leave the fabric sticking out.

Step Five:
Trim the fabric down so that you can fold it under the back of the button.

Step Six:
Put the shank part of the button kit DOWN on the fabric.

Step Seven:
Push down on the shank with your blue tool until you feel the 'snap', letting you know your button is secure.

Step Eight:
Remove button from the white piece and VIOLA...a fabric covered button!

Use them as fabric buttons, ponytail holders and more. You can also purchase flat backs to easily turn them into pushpins or magnets.

So save those scraps!!
