Introducing Natasha Scherrer of MothersLove. Her sure fire way to break an artist creative block? “I take a couple days off and do my nails, and try to pamper myself. Once I feel relaxed, the block is gone.” Let's find out a little more about who is creating these treasures in MothersLove:
Name: Natasha Scherrer
Location: DeSoto, MO
Shop Name: MothersLove
How did you come up with the name of your shop?
As cheesy as it sounds, I started the shop out of a mother's love. haha. After working full time outside the house almost two years after my son was born and missing so much, I decided to stay at home with him instead. It only seemed logical to name the shop what I did.
Tell us a bit about your craft/medium: Why you chose it? Did someone teach you?
I create what I like to consider beautiful affordable jewelry. I love accessorizing. Growing up, I was always playing dress up. I figured, why not make it myself! I taught myself. I read tutorials and such, and then winged it.
What is the most difficult part of your craft?
I've got arthritis in my main hand. So there's days where it hurts to grip pliers or hold on to the beading wire. Sometimes I just have to put everything up and try again the next day.
What is the most costliest part of your crafting?
Finding worthy supplies. In this economy, it's hard to just spend a lot of money and not be sure if it will be worth it. I don't want to skimp out on supplies, cause the end result will be awful.
What kind of music do you listen to (if any) when you create?
I like to listen to the TV. I put whatever show is on that night on and just watch it by ear.
What are your most productive times?
With a two year old running around during the day, it's hard to get any work done. So I do it after he goes to sleep in the evening.
Where can we find your work?
MothersLove.artfire.com
Tell us about your workspace-
Where do you create or work? I do it in the living room. I pull out the coffee table and that becomes my work space.
Do you have your own area or has it taken over the entire house? The guest room has become the supply closet. I have stuff sprayed all over the bed and dresser. I organize as best I can, then I make a mess of it all over again. I'm going to have to move it all into my own room here in a bit when my mom comes to visit though. AAAArrrrrgggghhhh
What has been your most successful marketing technique?
I'm still learning how to market myself. I post in the forums on AF.,plurk, tweet, and facebook. Those are where I see the most results from. Other than that, word of mouth. I wear my creations out and people sometimes ask me about them. I sold two pairs of earrings at a gas station that way!
If you could live anywhere in the world, where would you choose? And why?
I would definitely go back home to Spain. That's where I was born and I have a ton of family there. It's beautiful and the way of life is so much more laid back than here in the states.
How about some of your favorites?
Movie: Twilight
TV show? Supernatural, Hell's Kitchen
Quote? "All knowledge is worth having.”~ Jacqueline Carey
Holiday? Halloween. I love to play dress up!
Who is your hero - artistic or otherwise? and why?
My mother. She is such a strong, independent woman. I just admire her for always being true to herself and doing what makes her happy.
Do you have a favorite handmade item that you like to buy for yourself?
I haven't been able to really splurge on myself lately but when I do, it would be either Blushie or Normasbathandbody on Artfire. I like smelling yummy!
Do you have a favorite item that you have made?
I love all the items that I make. If I don't, I don't put them out.
Have you made anything that you just can't bear to part with?
There's been a couple. I normally decide to give them as gifts to family.
What’s your supply addiction; is there a specific color or type of supply you just can’t pass up? I always get drawn to the sparkly and shiny.
What is the best thing and the worst thing about being your own boss? I love not having to answer to anyone. I cringe at the thought of the blame of a boo boo being all mine.
Where do you get inspiration from? Love, Life, Nature. I am a romantic naturalist.
