CrochetAddict is a new shop on ArtFire that has a variety of crocheted items. Janice, the owner of the shop, says she welcomes special orders because after all, she is addicted to crochet. Let's get a little more acquainted with Janice:

Name: Janice Powell
Location: Burnsville, NC
Shop Name: CrochetAddict

Tell us a bit about your craft/medium-Why you chose it?
I would have to say crochet chose me. I have tried drawing, painting, and photography, but when I picked up the crochet hooks and discovered how much could be done with them and that I was actually able to make the pictures in my head come out right, I was hooked!

Did someone teach you?
Yes, my mother taught me the basics. I have been teaching myself new stitches and techniques ever since.

What is the most difficult part of your craft?
I would have to say, keeping it simple. I learn so many great stitches and tend to want to use them all RIGHT NOW, but I know that will just clutter up my work, so I have to pace myself and save that other neat stitch for my next project.

What is the most costliest part of your crafting?
The yarn is what costs me the most, and it is hard to not go buy new yarn when you still have some at home you could be using. They are all so pretty and inspiring!

Do you create in more than 1 medium?
I have done a couple of projects that are a combination of cross stitch and crochet, but crochet remains my passion.

Tell us about your workspace-
Where do you create or work?

At home, in my living room, or sitting out on the porch. That's a good thing about crochet, you can take it anywhere!

Do you have your own space or has it taken over the entire house?
It's beginning to take over the living room - I'm sure if I were not taking care of a husband and three kids too it would have taken over the house by now!

Has it evolved since you started your craft? crochet.JPGYes, instead of being in grocery bags scattered everywhere my husband bought me two stackable cabinets to put it all in, of course now it has taken over a bookshelf and a corner of the living room too. I guess I need more cabinets!

What are your most productive times?
*smile* when the little one is sleeping and the older ones are in school or out playing in the creek!

How about some of your favorites?
Color? Blue, I love all the variations of this color!
Food? french fries
Quote? "Christ will be exalted in my body, whether by life or by death. For to me to live is Christ, to die is gain." Philippians 1:20-21
Holiday?Christmas

Who is your hero - artistic or otherwise? and why?
My mother, I know everyone says that, but it's true, she is always so giving and self-less. I strive to be like her everyday.

Do you have a favorite handmade item that you like to buy for yourself?
I haven't had the cash flow to be able to purchase anything yet, but the first time I buy something just for me it will be a real flower rings or barrette from babywhitelephant.artfire.com

crochet2.JPGHave you made anything that you just can't bear to part with?
I'm probably going to have a hard time selling my first irish lace project. Irish lace takes so much time and is such an intimate kind of crochet for the artist.

What do you do when you get a creative block?
Find a new stitch or technique. That will always get me itching to put it into something, so I have to come up with something to fit it in!

When you go on vacation, do you take projects to work on?
Yes, to the frustration of my husband, I always have a project or two with me wherever I go.

What is the best thing and the worst thing about being your own boss?
Best thing is, if I have a "Lupus head day" I don't have to call in or feel guilty about leaving someone stranded. Worst thing is not having a guaranteed regular paycheck~ but that's just how things go.
