Welcome to HandmadeNews’ Handmade Venue Update! Here, we summarize all the recent events for the week of the top most used craft marketplaces on the web. That way, whether you sell at one site or several, you need only stop in here to get the news you need.
The venues listed below are all arranged in alphabetical order with links to each to the news updates on each of these websites’ news blogs. If we’ve missed anything please let us know!
NOTE: To help condense this update, I went ahead and removed a few of venues who have not updated in a while, namely, WinkElf, ShopHandmade, and MadeitMyself. I will still check these venues every week for updates, but for now they have been removed from the Handmade Venue Update until they post something new.
1000 Markets
1000 Markets experienced some server issues Sunday, November 22, according to their official tweets. It appears that the site was unavailable or slow-loading from some members form 7am -12pm.
There is also a new market over at 1000 Markets: Gifts that Keep on Giving. This collection runs from November 20th until January 31st, and features handmade items from artisans who donate part of the proceeds to different charities.
ArtFire
ArtFire is preparing for the Black Friday Cyber Monday weekend, during which they will feature Pro items with Promo Labels from their Black Friday, Cyber Monday, and Holiday Deals trend pages on their front page. These items will be displayed randomly to give members an equal chance of being seen. This event will last from 11/25-12/1, at which point the front page will resume its regular appearance.
ArtFire is also promoting a special contest from one of their common good partners. Lion Brand Yarn and Vanna White are holding the Vanna’s Choice contest, in which yarn artists submit their creations for a chance to win a grand prize of $1,000 and an all expense paid trip to Los Angeles to meet Vanna. There are more than 30 other prizes available, and members can enter as many projects as they want.
ArtFire has also brought live their new Edit Page, which, like their new listing process, is faster and creates fewer issues with third part sites. This also allows members to add Promo Labels to individual items. They are also working on a new MyArtFire page to make their back-end control panel easier to use for buyers and sellers alike, which should be live in the coming weeks.
DaWanda
DaWanda has posted their featured seller interview with Arete for the week, along with a fun quiz for members to determine which type of vampire they are.
DaWanda’s Advent Calendar under their Christmas Tools is also scheduled to begin Tuesday, November, 24.
Etsy
Etsy has launched their Facebook Application, the My Etsy. This application appears as separate tab on users’ Facebook pages and works the same way as an Etsy Mini, allowing users to view their shop on their profile or fan page. Members whose items arefeatured on the front page of Etsy or in a gift guide will also automatically have those items posted to their wall, allowing for notification for sellers and their Facebook friends. Non-sellers can also use this tool to show off a wish list or their favorites.
To help their members prepare for Cyber Monday and Black Friday, Etsy has posted an article for sellers with tips for getting involved. They also have posted some seller deals from their Etsy Success List, to help sellers stay organized and save this holiday.
John Allspaw from Flickr will be joining the Etsy engineering team as the VP of Technical Operations in January. Etsy has also made a post that their caching bug, which caused post counts in the forums to jump up and down upon reloading, has been fixed. They’ve also added a new flagging system to their Storque comments to help prevent spam. Under this system, users will receive a red warning message if their comment is seen as spam by the system.
Folksy
Folksy has announced its featured items for the week: The Best of British!
iCraft
There are no new updates for iCraft this week. Click here to read last week’s update.
SilkFair
This week, Silkfair is showing off some of their members creations as Table Decoration Ideas.
Zibbet
Zibbet is currently working on site-wide Coupon Codes, which will allow Premium Sellers to offer fully customizable coupons. This includes offering a value amount off or a percentage discount, setting the start and end date, limiting the number of times a code can be used, and giving a minimum order for the code to be valid. With these codes, they also plan to build in Gift Certificates, which would work similar to a value coupon.
